Applying A Filmic Look to Panasonic GH4 Cine-D Gamma Footage with Color Grading Central’s LUT Utility

by Peter Deak

I’m privileged to be working as the cinematographer for director/writer Stephanie Mitchell (Tsalagi Films LLC) on her upcoming 30-minute pilot, Requiem Lost, about a soldier who’s back home in the U.S. and having to come to terms with his PTSD.

We’ll be shooting in cinema 4K on the Panasonic GH4. We very much want a filmic look to the drama piece so I did some test shots with our supporting actor David Rose using the camera’s Cine-D profile.

The last thirty days have been very productive. Really Useful Media out of Brooklyn, New York, shot a piece here in Denver for their client, the Cancer Research Institute. I supported as sound recordist, b-roll camera operator, and lighting/grip.

I also operated live camera again for Spark Street Digital out of Washington D.C. Spark Street was hired to live stream for their client Zillow who led a summit on housing here in Denver. Colorado’s Governor Hickenlooper spoke, and Congressmen Corey Gardner and Ed Perlmutter took part in panel discussions.

Producer Deb Bergeron of DB Communications out of Groton CT hired me for a multi-day shoot for her client, Hypertherm, who chose to produce the project from their Denver office. It was a product demo for their new plasma cutter. Whenever you have sparks flying, it makes for dramatic visuals, especially close up!

Last week I was hired as a handheld camera operator by Life After Death Multimedia Productions LLC out of L.A. for Snoop Dogg and Friends 420 Event at Fiddler’s Green, which was live streamed. Weather: cool with a bit of haze. ;-)

I’ve been shooting more and more with my Panasonic GH4, capturing in UHD 4K. Clients have been very happy with the results. The detail in the image is amazing. At this stage, clients are down-converting to 1080p in post and distributing in 1080p but nevertheless the details and vibrant colors are carried through.

Lightsky Videography's Peter Deak attended the My Bloody Violent-tine Film Fest at the Bug Theatre with musician Luka Keck where her music video Losing Myself (produced by Lightsky) was screened along with all of the other horror short films. The film fest is put on by George Climer and is in its fifth year. It was a terrific evening of viewing truly original and haunting films, and networking with other filmmakers.

Lightsky Videography adds Panasonic GH4, 4K capable video, to equipment package.

"I'm so thrilled to dip my toes into the 4K world," said Peter Deak, cinematographer and owner/operator of Lightsky. In addition, the GH4 takes pro level stills and has many built in effects. The photo to the right was taken using the miniature effect feature in camera.

Peter already captured a client interview in UHD 4K using the GH4 for MasTec Advanced Technologies. Even though the client will down res the footage to 1080p for distribution, the detail and color gradation holds up and looks amazing. The client was very pleased with the results.

Lightsky Videography had the joy of collaborating once again with musician Luka Keck for another music video, this time for her song Losing Myself. Check out this video that has a twist on zombie tales.

Cinematographer Peter Deak once again shot on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera in digital raw format. Color correction was done on DaVinci Resolve 12. The video was shot over a weekend and one weekday evening.

Lightsky Videography co-produced Luka Keck's music video for her song Viking Song.

Luka is very talented and it was a pleasure working with her on the project. The song's story is a tale of love and revenge, complete with a sword fight. Who wouldn't love working on that?!

Check out the video (on the right).

Find out more about Luka on her website.

If you're interested in reading about shooting the project in 12-bit RAW on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, check out my article on Tumblr: Filming in 12-bit RAW for Viking Song Music Video (written by Peter Deak).

Lightsky Videography collaborated with Eugene Ebner on three new episodes for his web talk show, Conversations with Eugene Ebner (Ebner-Page Productions).

The first one features FOX31 Denver's entertainment reporter, Chris Parente. Chris is a talented entertainer and comedian in his own right and it was a lot of fun being around him.

Eugene is a talented actor, personable, and a joy to work with. And his talk show goes a little deeper than most, with meaningful conversation, featuring local celebs and those influential in the art and theater community.

EPA CLEAN WATER RULE COLORADO PROMO VIDEO

Public Interest GRFX and Environment Colorado hired Lightsky Videography to produce a promotional video supporting the EPA's and President Obama's recent changes to the Clean Water Act, which extended protections to thousands of tributaries and waterways not previously protected. (Go to www.environmentcolorado.org to find out more and support this ruling.)

The video involved interviewing politicians, a healthcare professional, and small businesses across the state speaking about the impact of the rule and the need for clean water. Of course, scenic nature shots of water were captured to be included in the video. (At right, a setup for a time lapse shot at Lake Dillon. Photo: Zak Swain, assistant camera.)

It was a pleasure working with Public Interest GRFX and Environment Colorado. Creating video for a great cause - what could be better?

2-minute short film about hummingbirds.

Hummingbirds A Tale of Conflict shows a male and female from the same species, the broad-tailed hummingbird, fighting over a feeder for the right to sit solo and eat, despite there being four perches.

A description of the cameras used, and capturing video from a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera on an external recorder, can be found on Lightsky's blog: lightskyvideo.tumblr.com. See Hummingbirds A Tale of Two Cameras.
